1. Yachting and its advances<\/h2>\n

The latest technological advances have made yachting more accessible<\/strong>, not only with regard to the platform – the boat and all of its essential accessories – <\/strong>but also with regard to navigation tools<\/strong>. This progress has been gradual, with the introduction of nautical charts (17th century), the sextant (18th century), and lastly, above all, the GPS (Garmin GPS 100 in 1991)![\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text admin_label=”Paragraphe 1″ module_id=”titre2″ _builder_version=”4.11.1″ background_size=”initial” background_position=”top_left” background_repeat=”repeat” custom_margin=”50px||||false|false” hover_enabled=”0″ global_colors_info=”{}” sticky_enabled=”0″]<\/p>\n

2. The smartphone: a true ally<\/h2>\n

In 2018, you can quite happily navigate with the smartphone in your pocket. There are many apps offering increasingly advanced services. You can now find all the information needed for safe yachting in real time, right at your fingertips.<\/p>\n

Which apps? How much do they cost? What do they do?<\/em><\/h3>\n
    \n
  1. \u00ab M\u00e9t\u00e9o \u201cM\u00e9t\u00e9o Marine\u201d (weather forecasts and maps)<\/li>\n
  2. \u201cMarine Imray Charts\u201d<\/li>\n
  3. \u201cNavionics\u201d (the best seller)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    The last two incorporate many services, from very precise geolocating<\/strong> on a marine chart to navigation assistance<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

    The price is rather high (\u20ac60 for the chart of Europe from Navionics<\/strong>), but it is less expensive than buying all the marine charts covering the navigable waters of Europe (\u20ac30 per chart on average), and you will appreciate the amount of information that is available via the application.<\/p>\n

    With Navionics, you can download the chart for a specific one, load the weather charts illustrated with arrows of different thicknesses on the map, and find out the times of the tides and water depth at a particular time. Finally, it provides the optimum route between two points, A and B, avoiding any obstacles and shoals that might lie between them. This is all available without a connection, because GPS is a standalone technology that can operate in Airplane Mode as long as you have loaded the charts and weather forecasts into the application.<\/p>\n

    Rear Admiral Jean Cras, inventor of the Cras navigation plotter that was previously used to trace a route and determine a heading, will have to go back to his grave, because now a little box that fits in your pocket can calculate the ideal route for the navigator, without requiring any knowledge of geometry.<\/p>\n

    3. Limitations of the smartphone<\/h2>\n

    We must however underline the hazards<\/strong> of this \u201cNavigation 2.0\u201d practice. The smartphone does not replace everything, especially in the context of sailing<\/strong>, where no licence or training is required, but which is still dangerous without some good nautical sense<\/strong> and theoretical knowledge of the boat and its environment<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

    Entering a canal on the wrong side or being on a collision course with a cargo vessel that weighs ten thousand times more that your own boat is generally inexcusable, and your smartphone is not (yet) capable of putting things back on an even keel.<\/p>\n

    Navigation is even more the province of experts when it takes place in busy and dangerous areas. Knowing how to anticipate a gust of wind, being aware of and accepting the risk of a sea trip, having the correct reaction to save a person who has fallen overboard, or using conventional means of communication<\/strong> (VHF radio) are all things that your smartphone can\u2019t do for you. For example, it is unthinkable to track the route of your ship with your smartphone when lying in your bunk on automatic pilot without any active and visual presence on the bridge of the boat.[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text admin_label=”Paragraphe 1″ module_id=”titre4″ _builder_version=”4.11.1″ background_size=”initial” background_position=”top_left” background_repeat=”repeat” custom_margin=”50px||||false|false” global_colors_info=”{}”]<\/p>\n

    4. A smartphone, yes, but not only that\u2026<\/h2>\n

    So, yes, it is possible to navigate with just a smartphone. It is a tool that will make it easy and convenient for your to navigate, and will make you forget those long hours spent bending over a salt-damaged chart kit. But you can\u2019t do this without knowing the rules of the sea and everything that makes a good sailor, bearing in mind that a phone battery doesn\u2019t last forever.<\/p>\n

    Les derni\u00e8res avanc\u00e9es technologiques ont permis de d\u00e9mocratiser la pratique du nautisme<\/strong>, tant du point de vue du support<\/strong> - le bateau et tous ses accessoires indispensables - que du point de vue des outils de navigation<\/strong>.     Quelles applications ? Quel tarif ? Quels usages ?<\/em><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

    Ces deux derni\u00e8res int\u00e8grent une multitude de service allant de la simple g\u00e9olocalisation <\/strong>sur carte marine tr\u00e8s pr\u00e9cise, \u00e0 l\u2019assistance du navigateur<\/strong>.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

    Le prix est assez cons\u00e9quent (60 \u20ac pour la carte Europe de Navionics<\/strong>) mais compar\u00e9 \u00e0 l\u2019achat de l\u2019ensemble des cartes marines couvrant les zones navigables en Europe (en moyenne 30\u20ac par carte), il repr\u00e9sente un co\u00fbt moindre, et vous trouverez satisfaction dans la quantit\u00e9 d\u2019informations disponibles via l\u2019application.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

    Avec l\u2019application Navionics, il est ainsi possible de t\u00e9l\u00e9charger la carte d\u2019une zone pr\u00e9cise, de charger les fichiers m\u00e9t\u00e9os vulgaris\u00e9s par des fl\u00e8ches plus ou moins \u00e9paisses sur la carte, de connaitre horaires de mar\u00e9es et profondeurs de l\u2019eau \u00e0 l\u2019heure souhait\u00e9e. Enfin, elle permet surtout d\u2019obtenir la route optimale entre un point A et un point B en \u00e9vitant les obstacles et haut-fonds qui peuvent les s\u00e9parer. Tout cela est \u00e9galement disponible sans connexion, le GPS \u00e9tant une technologie autonome fonctionnant en \u00ab mode avion \u00bb, pour peu que vous ayez charg\u00e9 les cartes et autres pr\u00e9visions m\u00e9t\u00e9o sur l\u2019application.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

    Le contre-amiral Jean Cras, inventeur de la r\u00e8gle de Cras utilis\u00e9e jusqu\u2019alors pour tracer sa route et connaitre son cap doit se retourner dans sa tombe : un boitier tenant dans une poche peut maintenant composer la route id\u00e9ale pour le navigateur sans que celui-ci n\u2019ait aucune connaissance en g\u00e9om\u00e9trie.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

    Les limites du smartphone<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

    Nous devons toutefois insister sur les dangers<\/strong> de cette pratique de navigation \u00ab 2.0 \u00bb.
    Le smartphone ne remplace pas tout, et c\u2019est d\u2019autant plus vrai dans le cadre de la pratique de la voile<\/strong>, qui ne requiert aucun permis ou formation, mais qui demeure extr\u00eamement dangereuse sans un bon sens marin <\/strong>et une connaissance th\u00e9orique du bateau <\/strong>et de son environnement. <\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

    Rentrer dans un chenal du mauvais c\u00f4t\u00e9, ou \u00eatre en route de collision avec un cargo pesant plus de dix-mille fois le poids de son bateau est g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement impardonnable et ce n\u2019est pas (encore) votre smartphone qui redressera la barre. <\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

    La navigation est d\u2019autant plus affaire d\u2019expert qu\u2019elle a lieu dans des zones fr\u00e9quent\u00e9es et dangereuses. Savoir anticiper un coup de vent, connaitre et assumer le risque d\u2019une sortie en mer, avoir les r\u00e9flexes qui sauvent un homme \u00e0 la mer, ou encore savoir utiliser les moyens de communication habituels <\/strong>(radio VHF) sont autant d\u2019\u00e9l\u00e9ments que votre smartphone ne peut g\u00e9rer \u00e0 votre place. Il est par exemple impensable de suivre la route de son navire avec son smartphone, allong\u00e9 depuis sa couchette en pilote automatique, sans avoir de pr\u00e9sence active et visuelle sur le pont du bateau. <\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

    Un smartphone oui, mais pas que\u2026<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
